Soul Blazer: Dark Genesis
A downloadable game for Windows and Linux
Plagued by an evil demon, the peaceful village of Emerald Ridge is spirited away one fateful evening. Only you, a lone avenger sent from above, can vanquish the evil set forth by Deathtoll, and release the souls of those captured.
Soul Blazer: Dark Genesis is a fan-prequel to the original Super Nintendo Action-RPG, Soul Blazer.
It is intended to be a full extra chapter that takes place prior to the events of the original Soul Blazer. While it is a prequel, you do not need to play the original to play this. If you like action RPGs or games with town-building features, this game is for you! It takes around 2 hours to complete.
This game was created with the sole intention of spreading some love for the Soul Blazer games. As this is a fangame, it is free and no money is to be collected for it.
Controls:
Default keyboard controls are:
Move Up/Left/Right/Down: Arrow Keys
Attack/Confirm: X Key

This game also features full controller support and remapping.
Tip! Check the Status Menu often to see how many enemy lairs are remaining in an area.
Final Thoughts:
This project was a solo-developed passion project that took over two years to complete. If you have any recorded playthroughs or live streams, please let me know!
I have strived for this to be a bug-free experience, however if you experience any trouble, please contact me at CloudLunaGames@gmail.com to file a bug report.
(Please note: the Linux version hasn't been tested separate of the Windows version, so the end result may be different).
Thank you and happy gaming!

It has been over a year since I have released this, and I have received a lot of positive feedback and praise from people who have played. Some folks have posted Let's Plays; I have watched them all and have enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the game.
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone. It means so much that something I tinkered with for a few years actually provided some enjoyment to your day.
I am pleasantly surprised. Normally, when I see something like this, I end up with a heaping mass of poor decisions pasted together that could barely even be called a game, named weirdly, and claims to be a "fan" project related to a franchise, only to actually be an insult to that franchise.
This, on the other hand, was absolutely great. I only have 2 issues with it, and neither are bugs (I didn't even notice a single bug, so great work there!):
1) One of the most instrumental parts of the original, a move that Quintet deemed so necessary that they put it in all 3 of Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia/Time, and Terranigma, is sadly absent from this - the psychic pull, which in this game is also known as the "crab walk" due to you holding your sword in a ready position and strafing. There were a couple of minor reasons to use this, but the main use for it in this specific game, was to pull jewels to you from a distance, so you wouldn't have to put yourself in harms way to pick them up. It was also useful to tell when an enemy was in your range (and outright dealing with weaker ones), but the game wasn't really long enough for that to be an issue.
2) It's too short. Perhaps that was the point, but I really felt like you could have done more with this. You had just about everything down, that the game uses, you probably could have literally made a full on remake of the original... though I don't blame you for not doing that, given who owns the rights to this game now. Maybe an extra boss fight or something would have helped, but while this game was good, it stopped right at the point where I wanted more... and there is none aside from replaying the original!
Thank you for actually caring enough to make your fan game actually feel like the original, and uploading it so that the rest of us could see it. It was a pleasure to see something that, for a change, was not an insult to the franchise it's a fan game of.
As someone who still loves the original Soul Blazer game i thoroughly enjoyed playing Soul Blazer Dark Genesis.
In my last playthrough of the original game i maxed out to level 50. As seen here in my youtube video
After beating Dark Genesis i decided for a little extra fun to try and max out the character level. I hit level 100 and apparently it keeps going. Was curious if anyone knows what the max level is?
That's amazing that you managed to hit level 100. How long did that take? I believe I forgot to program in a level cap, to be honest.
I actually ended up stopping at level 250 and it took roughly 18 hours.
I'm looking forward to the Soul Blazer remake!
After playing Soul Blazer a lot the past few years (randomizer & speed runs), this was a refreshing game to play. I like how the town is very dense, and I can tell a lot of passion went into making this. There were some other surprises that go beyond the SNES hardware's capabilities. Thanks for making this game, I really enjoyed it!
This was very impressive, it really took me back! Some feedback would be to make either the first gamepad binding the "down" axis, or allow us to set the gamepad binding with the keyboard.
The first thing I noticed when trying this is the most important feature is missing.. strafing! Please add strafing (crab walking) like the original has! :)
This game...I used to LOVE soul blazer and this game, actually...FEELS LIKE SOUL BLAZER. I am going to make parts on this series until completion will probably do edits on it in future eps and longer so i can get through it all. But I am so excited to make more on this. Keep up the amazing work and left a follow, you my fair person, have hit a nostalgia I have not had hit in a looong time (will probably be 30 to an hour upon post for upload recording size was rather large lol)
Oh man, this looks amazing! Definitely gonna give it a try. Loved the Soul Blazer Tetrology, so this is my jam!
